A Beach Vacation Getaway in the Florida Keys

Trying to decide where to go to find some great beach vacation getaways?
Think Margaritaville

The Florida Keys

The Florida keys are ideal places to find some great beach vacation getaways. There is a reason that Hemingway had a beach house in the keys, and that Jimmy Buffett sings songs about life down here. This is where you can truly get away from it all, relax, and just enjoy life. Best of all, you don't need a passport, you won't be stranded, and nobody is going to vote you off the island.

Remember Changes in Latitude = Changes in attitude.

You probably know about Key West, so let's move on to some of the other keys.

Key Largo

The first and one of the largest keys that you encounter, Key Largo is less than an hour from Miami, but world’s away from the hustle and bustle. Due to the beginning of North America's only living coral barrier reef being just off its’ eastern coast, this island has become renown for snorkeling & scuba diving. The proximity to the mainland has helped ensure a nice variation of accommodations. An assortment of beautiful hotels & resorts are available. There is even a resort on a 60-acre protected mangrove forest.

Key Bahia Honda

Nobody lives here. How is that for getting away from it all? The key is entirely a state park, and all that implies. It does have camping areas for tenting. We camped here one-time when I was a kid. However, if you are not that into roughing it, there are also cabins that sleep six available. Bahia Honda is especially known for it’s crystal clear waters that are absolutely beautiful. Combine that with gorgeous sunsets, and you have a formula for wonderfully romantic wedding location.

Big Pine Key

If you are looking for something that is a little more civilized then tent camping, but not quite high end resorts, try Big Pine Key. Rent a cottage, stay in a small hotel, or camp if you wish. Something you can count on though, this is still very much small town Florida life, and great for a beach vacation getaway.. You’ll love it.

There are also several other keys to explore, especially in the "Lower Keys" area. If you are feeling really adventurous, there are islands only accessible by boat, and the reef is great for scuba diving.

Most people from out of state get to the keys by flying into Miami or Ft Lauderdale, and then driving to the keys. If you wish to avoid Miami or Ft Lauderdale, you can also fly into Marathon Key or Key West. If you have the time though the drive across the bridges is worth it.
